This interactive workshop invites participants to reflect on the meanings of home and the ideas and feelings we associate with it before exploring what happens when home is lost, left behind, or made impossible to return to. We will engage with short excerpts from 20th-century Spanish women’s writing through guided discussion and small-group activities. Drawing on her dissertation research, María Medín Doce will introduce key concepts around displacement, exile, and identity before examining how three Spanish women writers represent the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. Working with selected passages, participants will reflect on questions of memory, belonging, and identity while considering how each protagonist experiences displacement differently: from exile as fragmented memory and imagined return, to the construction of hybrid identities across borders, to the experience of those left behind, shaped by absence and gender.

Doce (Galicia, Spain) is a visiting assistant professor of Spanish in the Romance Languages and Literature Department at Colgate University. She completed her PhD at Stony Brook University.

The event will include a Q&A with the filmmaker and will be moderated by Christian A. Johnson, Artist in Residence Adam Samuel Goldman.

This screening and performance is part of An Agreeable Kind of Horror, a semester-long intervention by Adam Samuel Goldman, Christian A. Johnson Artist in Residence.

Opening on a dry history of the 18th-century Grand Tour, the talk shatters into a mosaic of tangents—the birth of the sublime, architectural fantasies, souvenir mugs, Gen-X aesthetics, disaster movies—setting the stage for an ambitious semester of projects, programs, and transdisciplinary collaborations across the Colgate campus.

A reception for the Artist immediately follows the talk.

Situated within settler colonialism, rather than against it, US-based liberal feminist thinking and doing does not engage the anti-colonial or decolonial feminist scholarship and organizing that grounds Puerto Rican feminisms.

In this Brown Bag, Asili and Pabón will present Puerto Rican feminisms in song, in prose, and through dialogue with one another. Moving from the refrain “Porque Estamos Aquí,” taken from their 2025 anthology of the same name, they will discuss the stakes of presence for boricuas in print and in performance, in and outside of the classroom, in politics and protest, and in everyday life.

Taína Asili is a dynamic singer, composer, interdisciplinary artist, and activist carrying on the tradition of her Puerto Rican ancestors, fusing past and present struggles into one soulful and defiant voice. She is celebrated by NPR, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Democracy Now! for her soulful, genre-blending music echoing calls for love and liberation. Her Resiliencia music album and film series, centered on the stories of women of color overcoming trauma, was recognized and awarded at prominent film festivals throughout the nation. In 2019, she wrote the newest anthem for One Billion Rising, a global movement to end gender-based violence founded by V (formerly Eve Ensler). Today Taína Asili is the US Coordinator for One Billion Rising and Board Chair of Soul Fire Farm. Her latest interdisciplinary show, Fever Pitch, combines original music, dance, and video to address the urgency of climate justice, and in 2025 she embarked on the Fever Pitch Pilgrimage, a 15-day, 156-mile journey walking from Albany to Brooklyn to bring public music rituals that connected art with frontline activism. Through her innovative fusion of creative expression and political engagement, Asili continues to forge new pathways for cultural resistance and collective transformation.

Dr. Jessica N. Pabón-Colón (she/her) is a diaspoRican queer feminist scholar of identity, community, and resistance. She is the editor of the first English-language collection of Puerto Rican feminist writings—Porque Estamos Aquí: Puerto Rican Feminisms Against Empire (The Feminist Press, 2025)—and author of the first academic book on women in graffiti subculture—Graffiti Grrlz: Performing Feminism in the Hip Hop Diaspora (NYU Press, 2018). She currently serves as President of the National Women’s Studies Association.

Christina J. Carney (she/her) is an associate professor of Black (queer) sexuality studies at the University of Missouri Columbia documents how some Black women reconceptualized the public and private spheres, using residential hotels and multiuse commercial spaces for housing and work, controlling their erotic economies and their sexual-cultural lives.

Carney is the author of Disreputable Women: Black Sex Economies and the Making of San Diego (2025). Her research interests include Black feminism, sex work and sex economies, urban studies, and the African diaspora.

A mascot retired. A monument dismantled. What if liberation is not something we seek outside ourselves, but a practice we carry in the body? Following the work of Indigenous poets and theorists, this talk takes up poetics as a liberatory practice, one any reader can learn to enact at the scale of breath, line, and refusal rather than at the scale of the state.

Reading Layli Long Soldier's WHEREAS alongside Joy Harjo's An American Sunrise, we attend to how embodied form carries liberation as relation and obligation rather than as freedom from constraint. We see this in the grammar Long Soldier turns against a federal apology and in the relational, gendered labor of Harjo's elegy for her mother. Together we read and write by breath, leaving with a portable practice for making these liberations legible in our own writing.

A citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Santee Frazier earned a BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts and an MFA from Syracuse University. His first collection of poems, Dark Thirty (2009), was published by the University of Arizona Press, which released his second collection, Aurum, in 2019. Frazier's honors include a Lannan Foundation Residency Fellowship, the School for Advanced Research Indigenous Writer-in-Residence, the Native Arts & Culture Foundation Literature Fellowship, and an Amant Studio & Research Residency Fellowship in Siena, Italy. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Colgate University.

Beginning with endometriosis and moving through hysteria, psychosurgery, institutionalization, and the reproductive violence of psychiatric confinement, Maria Rovito demonstrates how Western medicine has produced "difficult" women by casting them as pathological. Through the framework of "Mistresses of Mayhem," she brings feminist disability studies and reproductive justice together to ask what becomes possible when women labeled hysterical, malingering, and neurotic are built into our bones and refuse to stay buried.

Rovito (she/her) is a scholar and instructor of medical humanities at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences where she teaches classes on reproductive justice, disability studies, and narrative medicine. She is the author of Cripping Endometriosis: Feminist Disability Histories and Reflections on Power and Pain (Palgrave, 2026).
