Since its launch, the TikTok app has grown rapidly in popularity and particularly among youth. In October of 2018, it was the most-downloaded photo/video app and currently has over 500 million monthly active global users. In Botswana, the number of people using social media for daily news doubled in the years just prior to the pandemic (from 2014-2019 over a third of the population gained access to such sources). Throughout the African continent, TikTok’s popularity and usage continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by younger age-groups and others seeking personal connections, who joined during lockdown. Across southern Africa, where transnational-movement has been largely limited to those ‘essential’ travelers (long-haul truck drivers) who provide goods across national boundaries, TikTok has taken on an expanded role as a means to communicate, connect, and navigate boundaries.
