About this Event
A Brown Bag by Sophia Yan an award-winning foreign correspondent, who has worked for CNBC in Beijing, CNN in Hong Kong, and Bloomberg News in Hong Kong and Washington, D.C. She has traveled around the world examining the intersection of money, power, politics, and government, and reporting on women’s rights, technology, and innovation.
Mao Zedong famously said that "women hold up half the sky," and China’s own constitution even affirms commitment to women’s rights. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has highlighted women in recent years, calling for an environment where all women shine. Still, for both countries, there is a long way to go when it comes to supporting its women. A look at where China and Japan stack up on gender equality, particularly in the workplace and in government, an examination of the challenges at hand from lining up childcare to China's crackdown on feminists, and a discussion of what improving the situation means.
