Reasons of the Heart: Reflections on Seeing Ourselves and Others

Philosophers pursue wisdom. The religious worship the source of all wisdom. Those who think of themselves as neither philosophers nor religious, still seek a life with meaning. So, among the first questions asked are: “what makes a life meaningful?” and “who is to say?” This last question seems best answered by responding, since it is our life at risk, we have to answer for ourselves the best we can.

Taking to heart this personal aspect of our issue, we will consider how to build up our capacity to recognize what is meaningful, good and wise when it is there waiting for us to acknowledge its presence. This means considering divergent ways of seeing ourselves and others as a work of preparation.

Presented by the departments of Philosophy and Religion, through the support of the M. Holmes Hartshorne Memorial Fund.
