Speaker: Milica Kolarevic, Visiting Instructor of Sociology and Anthropology

Title: Life is elsewhere - Postsocialist Dreams of a Neoliberal Future in Serbia

Brief Description: Narratives of oncology patients and students of medicine in Serbia  resonate with simultaneous nostalgia for the policies and practices of a socialist past, hope for a different kind of future, and hopelessness of whether such a future is possible. Experiences of an intelligible loss is at the heart of the narratives surrounding people's efforts to make sense of a "chaotic", "turbulent" and "neverending" transition. This research analyses the strategic and discoursive use of loss and hoplesness to map out the nostalgic Serbian storytelling.
