Title: Against care: Prison abolition and the challenge of the progressive jail
Description: In recent years, a growing political consensus in the US has called for an end to the policies of mass incarceration. Meanwhile, at the county level, progressive sheriffs have been expanding the reach and capacity of their jails, responding to calls for more investment in rehabilitation - especially treatment for addiction and mental and behavioral health. Drawing on ethnographic research with formerly incarcerated organizers, I consider how this “carceral care” complicates movements for decarceration and prison abolition.
The next talk in this series is on Mar. 24th with Professor Daisaku Yamamoto (GEOG).
