Professor Monica Liu from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology

Title: Seeking Western men: Email-Order Brides Under China's Global Rise

Brief Description: Monica Liu received her Ph.D. in sociology from UC San Diego. As a Visiting Assistant Professor at Colgate University, her research examines global internet dating and cross-border marriage between women from China and men from Western countries. Her work is based on longitudinal ethnographic research in both China and the U.S. (2008-2019). This project is situated within the larger context of China’s economic ascendance and a relative Western decline. How do shifts in the global economic order reshape Chinese women’s perception of Western masculinity? How do the commercial intermediaries market Western men to their Chinese female clients in light of the men’s declining economic power within a global context? Moreover, do the women’s own vastly different class positions within China shape their dating strategies and marital trajectories differently? Through the unique window of global internet dating, this project explores how macro-level structural shifts in political economy reshape race, class, gender, ethnicity, and nationality across borders.

Next Lunch will be on Feb 20th with Professor Stiegler!
