Join us for a showing of Show Boat (dir. James Whale, 1936, 113 minutes, 35mm collection print courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive).

Universal’s ambitious adaptation of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s musical, itself an adaptation of the novel by Edna Ferber, Show Boat examines American racial politics—the one-drop rule, anti-miscegenation laws, segregation—through the story of a theatrical troupe performing on a Mississippi River showboat at the turn of the century. The film simultaneously reveals the complex racial politics of the American entertainment industry in the 1930s: musical numbers performed in blackface are juxtaposed with show-stopping performances by Black legends like Paul Robeson.

This screening is co-sponsored by the Department of Music.
