The Residential Commons were launched in 2014, inspired by conversations and goals articulated by faculty and staff and culminating in A New Vision for Residential Education (2003) and Living the Liberal Arts (2013). Colgates Third-Century Plan builds on these earlier goals and is grounded in the desire for all students to have a strong foundational community from the first day, a place where they experience tradition and build class unity, and where University affinity is cultivated. The goals of the Residential Commons program include:

  • to promote increased student interaction with staff and faculty, especially outside of formal classrooms or programs,
  • to embrace diversity where one lives as a way of furthering human understanding,
  • to foster health and wellness among students and the campus community, and
  • to establish a living community that is supportive and welcoming for all.

We seek colleagues who can help lead this important residential program in collaboration with both professional staff members in residential life and also student community leaders. With support from the DOC and PDOF, commons directors infuse additional academic, intellectual, social, and cultural activities into the first- and second-year experience and thus help strengthen and deepen Colgate’s residential liberal arts education.

Nominations can be sent to us via Self-nominations are welcome as are nominations from staff, faculty, and administrators.

Zoom links will be available for each of these sessions upon request.
