About this Event
Professor Enrique (Kiko) Galvez, Physics & Astronomy Department will speak. In a twist of fate, certain light beams have the same equations as the simple pendulum in the quantum regime. Microscopic pendula do not exist because gravity is so weak relative to electric forces, but some systems, such as molecules and atoms in the presence of specific arrangements of fields, behave like a quantum pendulum. With optical beams we can get to see what these microscopic pendulum-like systems do (and make them swing and spin).
