Perry Paree: A Staged Reading & World Premiere
Join us at Arts at the Palace on June 15th & 16th at 7pm for a staged reading and world premiere of the musical, Perry Paree, by Dianne Adams and James McDowell and directed by Anthony Salatino. A fictional biography, full of original show tunes, Perry Paree chronicles the life and career of dim-witted, but lovable crooner, Lenny London. On his often-hilarious journey, from his humble beginnings in the hayseed, starstruck town of Buttzville, Rhode Island, to the slick, savvy world of show biz in New York City, Lenny makes a surprising discovery about himself.
The reading boasts an all-star cast including David Lowenstein, Lori Wilner, Celia Madeoy, Liam Fitzpatrick, Mason McDowell, Eric Feola, Sara Donnellan, Amber Nicole Gatlin, John Downey and Jules Slocum. Tickets are $25 reserved table seating, $20 general admission. The evening will include light refreshments and a “talk back” after the reading.
A chance meeting in NYC, over 40 years ago, led to a life-long collaboration of music and lyrics, playwriting, and theatre arts. Adams & McDowell, also husband and wife, have collectively created a myriad of works, ranging from pop songs, plays, and jingles, to art songs, masses, and musicals. Their highly-acclaimed version of Kenneth Grahame's classic, The Wind in the Willows, originally developed at Syracuse Stage with collaborator Dr. Gerardine Clark, had it's NYC premiere at The New Victory Theatre on 42nd Street. Presented at New Jersey Repertory Company and The York Theatre, their musical, Bookends (co-authored with Katharine Houghton), was the subject of a feature article in The New York Times. Other collective credits include vocal arrangements for Broadway's Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder (winner of 2014 Tony for Best Musical), Disney productions, Radio City Music Hall's Magnificent Christmas Spectacular, Broadway's Tony-Nominated Starmites, and the Actor's Playhouse (off-B'way) production of Rapunzel & the Dragons. Awards and Honors include the Helen Hayes Award (Nomination, Washington, D.C.), The Barrymore Award (Recipient, Philadelphia), The Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP Award (Recipient), Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence for Spring 2013 (Colgate University), as well as numerous ASCAP Composer Awards. Palace Theater productions include: Very Badly Killed, In Good Company, Blood, Bath & Beyond, Holy Cow, it's Here, and the 2015 Palace Gala, Breathing Art Into Life. Adams and McDowell can also be seen each month at the Palace Underground's popular series, Jazz at Noon. They live on five acres near Eaton, NY, where they enjoy the rural life of picturesque Central New York.
From the inception of Arts at the Palace, the establishment of an incubator program for the development of new works has been a major goal. The long term vision for the program is to hold an annual residency program for playwrights, directors, actors, and artistic support staff who will over the course of the summer develop and produce a new work that will then be ready to transfer to larger venues.
