Thawing Antarctica’s Permafrost: Earth & Environmental Science Mystery
About this Event
1819 Oak Dr, Hamilton, NY 13346, USA
Join us for an NASC Colloquium on "What’s Thawing Antarctica’s Permafrost?: An Earth and Environmental Science Mystery" presented by Joe Levy, associate professor of earth and environmental geosciences.
Something is beginning to warm Antarctica’s hard frozen permafrost, but the warming seems to be happening in the dead of Antarctic winter. Come learn how a Colgate student project broke open this mystery of how frozen ground could be warming during the coldest time of the year. We’ll explore how sensors deployed in the Antarctic cold desert, combine with data from drones, and ground-based measurements to determine whether climate change will mark the end of Antarctica’s permafrost or will herald the beginning of a new phase of Antarctica’s role in global environmental processes.
Reception to follow in the Ho Science lower atrium.
