All first-year students were required to read Home Fire.
Inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone, Kamila Shamsie’s novel Home Fire, was longlisted for the Booker Prize and won the Women's Prize for Fiction. She is the author of six other novels, including Kartography and Broken Verses, both of which won the Patras Bokhari Award from the Academy of Letters in Pakistan. Ms. Shamsie has also won Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Prime Minister's Award for Literature in Pakistan, and was selected as one of the Orange’s “21 Writers of the 21st Century” for her novel Salt and Saffron. Born in Karachi, Ms. Shamsie graduated from Hamilton College and has occasionally taught there. She makes her home in London, where she is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
