“A wild thing . . . covered in sequins and scales, blazing with the influence of fabulists”: that’s how The New York Times described Carmen Maria Machado’s debut story collection. Named to the Times’ “New Vanguard” list of “15 remarkable books by women that are shaping the way we read and write fiction in the 21st century,” Her Body and Other Parties won the Bard Fiction Prize, the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction, and the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize. It was a finalist for the National Book Award. Ms. Machado is Writer in Residence at the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Philadelphia.
