Lifelong Learning Program- To Hell and Back: Journeys to the Underworld in Ancient Mediterranean Religions

This illustrated talk explores various notions of the underworld in Greek and Roman legends about the underworld as well as ancient Christian stories about Jesus's descent to the underworld. The Harrowing of Hell, as the legend became called, describes his journey to Hell in the days between his death and his resurrection. For these storytellers what followed Christ’s last breath was anything but silence.

Facilitator: Georgia Frank, Professor of Religion, has been teaching at Colgate since 1994. Her research specializes in ancient Christian legends found in and beyond the Bible.
