Do you like creating and being part of an intentional community of passionate individuals?

Do you want to both learn and apply leadership and decision making skills in a variety of contexts?

Are you looking for personal growth within a supportive and educational environment?

If you answered yes (or even maybe), then you should consider applying for next year’s Outdoor Education Staff Training program.

Previous outdoor experience is NOT necessary

Come learn more at the REQUIRED* information session on

Thursday, April 7th at 4:30 PM in Base Camp

Outdoor Education Staff Training is a nine-month program (September-May), open to first-years and sophomores. Upon completion, qualified students are eligible to be hired as Outdoor Education staff members. Staff members lead Wilderness Adventure trips, Physical Education courses, Backyard Adventures, team building programs, break trips, and are also eligible to apply for other work at the Angert Family Climbing Wall and the Outdoor Equipment Rental Center.

Members of the Class of 2025 who are selected to participate in next year’s training program will make up approximately half of the 18-person training group next year (the other half to be chosen from the Class of 2026 next fall).

No previous outdoor experience is necessary to be a successful applicant, as you will learn everything you need to know during the training program. That said, successful applicants will:

Have a sincere interest in teaching and leading their peers

Possess a positive attitude, even in sometimes challenging situations

Demonstrate a commitment to all aspects of the training program and to working for Outdoor Education after training

Bring a diverse set of experiences, backgrounds, and identities to the group and the larger Outdoor Education community

Appreciate and respect the natural and cultural history of the lands on which we travel and recreate

After attending the Information Session, the application process will include a written application and in-person interviews (don’t stress, they are mostly fun!) between April 11th and April 22nd. The application as well as the exact timeline for applying can be found on the Staff Training Website. If you have any questions about Staff Training or the application process, please contact Director of Outdoor Education, Ben Oliver, at boliver@colgate.edu.
