This session named "Indigenous Oaxacan Migration: Community-Based Organizing and the Guelaguetza en Oregon" aims to look at the nuances of the transnational migration of Indigenous people from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. This presentation stems from the research that was conducted for Raquel's anthropology thesis. This presentation will include personal experiences alongside community voices that have contributed to the advocacy of farmworkers rights and cultural preservation. This presentation follows the high concetrations of Oaxacan settlement on the West Coast (California, Oregon, and Washington) the strong contribution of Oaxacan farmworkers - specifically Mixtec and Triqui individuals.The topics that will be covered will include anti-Indigeneity, migrant farmworkers, environmental justice, colonialism and pan-Oaxacan collective action.
Workshop Speaker
Raquel Marquez Guerrero (she/her) is a senior, majoring in anthropology and minoring in peace and conflict studies. She is from the state of Oregon and was raised from an Indigenous Mixtec family and community. Raquel has been an active student leader and has served on the CORE of LASO and has been the house manager for La Casa, as well as assisting in revitalizing the Native American and Indigenous Student Alliance (NAISA) on campus this year. Raquel is dedicated to service and advocacy and is passionate about community organizing within her academic pursuits.
