How Student Journalism Can Support Campus Change
Saturday, January 27, 2024 2pm to 2:50pm
About this Event
1819 Oak Dr, Hamilton, NY 13346, USA
One of the greatest challenges student advocates face is building broad understanding and support for their objectives. Determining how community members can effect change can also be challenging. At Hamilton College, an alternative, social justice-oriented publication, the Monitor (hamiltonmonitor.com), has helped address that challenge by combining incisive opinion pieces from advocates with rapid, investigative-focused news reporting that demystifies how, and for whom, campus decisions are made. In this presentation and small group workshop, we'll answer questions like: How and why should movements and journalists (not mutually exclusive!) work together? How can leaders tailor messages/platforms for different campus groups and build credibility among them? Where do you look for investigations and narratives that can shape the campus conversation and agenda?
Workshop Speakers
Eric Santomauro-Stenzel (he/him) is from Sayville, NY and is part of the class of 2024 at Hamilton College. Eric is an interdisciplinary major in social movements and community organizing journalist of identity, power, and social movements.
