Special Collections & University Archives presents a lecture on the current library exhibition “Relegated to the Margins: Women of the Arts & Crafts Movement.” Xena Becker, exhibition curator and special collections librarian, will illuminate the many roles women played in the arts & crafts printing movement, with particular emphasis on works designed by Helen Marguerite O’Kane Conwell (H.M. O’Kane) of the Elston Press.
Colgate Special Collections & University Archives holds the majority of H.M. O’Kane’s personal collection of Elston Press works, thanks to the donation of her grandson James O’Kane Conwell, Jr. ‘54. The lecture will be complemented by a display of special collection materials that are reproduced in the exhibition, as well as a chance to design a personalized button and bookplate.
The lecture and question-and-answer session will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Batza followed by materials engagement with the curator from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Batza, and button making, bookplate decorating, and food from 12:!5 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Flex Room.
