History Conversations: “‘Rugby is Life’: Researching Rugby in the Pacific Islands (Fiji, Tonga and Samoa)"

Over the past decade Professor Robert Dewey (class of ’88) has pursued research on rugby football in the Pacific Islands towards a monograph on the History of Rugby in Fiji and articles on the professionalization of rugby in 1995 following a century of amateur competition. His talk will include reflections on the challenges and rewards of conducting historical research in a region that embraces the phrase “Rugby is Life”. In particular, the discussion will include consideration of indigenous histories, colonialism, insider-outsider dynamics, archival work, oral histories, sports history and consultancy work on behalf of the Fiji and Samoa Rugby Unions.
