Filmmaker Sky Hopinka in Person!

Sky Hopinka’s feature film debut maɬni – towards the ocean, towards the shore poetically contemplates the origin of the Chinookan death myth through the lives of Sweetwater Sahme and Jordan Mercier. As these protagonists wander the Pacific Northwest, they take separate paths through questions of afterlife, rebirth, and death. Spoken mostly in Chinuk Wawa (aka Chinook Jargon), maɬni – towards the ocean, towards the shore ultimately opens onto important ecological ideas about the porous, dynamic relationship between humans and the nonhuman world. maɬni will be preceded by Dislocation Blues, a short film reflection from Standing Rock.
