Mississippi Masala (1991), from South Asian American filmmaker Mira Nair, stars Denzel Washington (as Demetrius) and Sarita Choudhury (as Mina). The film was the first to show African American and South Asian American love on screen.

As part of the Women's Studies Brown Bag Series, Professor Nimanthi Rajasingham will give a talk after the film on "Diasporas, Intimacy and Desire: South Asian American and African American Love".

Taking the main characters' intimacy as a starting point, the talk will discuss how the film helps us understand different iterations of diaspora, and the political nature of love. Professor Rajasingham will explore how intimacy and affect are central ways through which racial and gender boundaries are crossed.
