Join the Environmental Studies program for a reflective conversation on how sustainability and social justice intersect. Together, we’ll explore how living our values can foster equity and environmental care in our communities. 

The first Environmental Studies Brown Bag of 2026 will feature April Baptiste, associate dean of the faculty for global and local initiatives; Leary Family Chair in Environmental Studies; professor of environmental studies and Africana & Latin American studies.

This talk explores the transformative potential of grassroots financial systems in advancing equity and resilience in vulnerable communities. Drawing on a mixed-methods community based approach of Mutuelles Solidarités (MUSO) groups in Petit-Goâve Haiti, the presentation examines how microfinance participation influences economic stability, social cohesion, and environmental practices. The talk highlights how MUSO embodies Dr. King’s vision of mutuality, dignity, and justice by fostering community-led development rooted in solidarity and care.

This event will be in collaboration with the ALANA MLK Week event series. Hot wraps from Hamilton Whole Foods will be provided and will include vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free options. Please bring your own reusable water bottle.
