The Longyear Museum of Anthropology announces the opening of a new student-curated exhibition, Earth to Fire: Pottery Technologies Around the World, on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. This exhibition brings together fifty objects from the pottery collections of both the Longyear Museum of Anthropology and the Picker Art Gallery. These objects represent pottery making traditions from ancient to contemporary communities in South Africa, Nigeria, China, Thailand, Panama, Peru, and Native American nations. The exhibition explores the entire process of pottery manufacture, including the selection of materials, the shaping of clay, the treatment of surfaces, and firing methods. An interactive center allows visitors to practice forming clay using different shaping techniques and learn how to analyze potsherds.
