The field of Planetary Defense contains all activities that would be required to help humanity defend itself if an asteroid were on a collision course with Earth. Within Planetary Defense, one of the best tools we have is to deflect an asteroid before it hits Earth. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is a NASA mission to test our ability to deflect asteroids, which will be launching in November 2021. Complex impact simulations are also used in exercises at the Planetary Defense Conference to test our ability to work through a scenario where an asteroid was on a collision course with Earth. Here, we’ll discuss the DART mission, the impact models we use to better understand what to expect, and other wider planetary defense activities.
