Jacob Abell, Colgate Visiting Assistant Professor in Romance Languages and Literatures, will deliver a talk on his recent research.

In the twelfth century, two poets composed elaborate quest narratives eventuating in the strange realm of the Earthly Paradise: Benedeit's Voyage of St. Brendan the Abbot and the Purgatory of St. Patrick by Marie de France. This talk will explore how these medieval French tales took up the Earthly Paradise as a geography that could express hopes for idealized forms of community that renounced personal wealth and celebrated communal solidarity.
