The Department of Music presents: Concert by Balla Kouyaté and World Vision.

Virtuoso jeli (musician/storyteller) and performer of the balafon (a gourd-resonated xylophone) Balla Kouyaté and his ensemble present an energetic fusion of traditional West African (Mandé) music with flavors of Afropop and jazz. Kouyaté’s lineage as a jeli goes back some 800 years to Balla Fasséké Kouyaté, jeli of the first Malian emperor, Sunjata Keita.

7:30pm - Concert: Balla Kouyaté and World Vision at the Memorial Chapel

Join us before the concert for the opening of the Longyear Museum of Anthropology’s exhibit Beyond the Beat: Explorations in Music and Culture (5:30 in Alumni Hall, 2nd floor). Refreshments will be provided.

This event is co-sponsored by the Longyear Museum of Anthropology, Colgate Arts Council, Asian Studies, African and Latin American Studies, Core Communities and Identities, Core Legacies, and University Studies.
