This presentation explores the expanding role of AI in academic libraries, focusing on the evolution of AI tools like ChatGPT and their influence on information discovery and education. Dr. Leo Lo will share key findings from the AI literacy study and highlight the University of New Mexico's GPT-4 exploration program. The talk emphasizes the necessity of AI literacy among librarians and educators, identifying seven competencies crucial for effectively integrating and critically evaluating AI tools in academic settings. Attendees will gain insights into enhancing AI understanding and ethical practices in libraries. The goal is to empower library professionals to become leaders in an AI-enhanced academic landscape, ensuring that libraries remain vital centers of knowledge, innovation, and ethical guidance.

Lo joined the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences as dean and professor in September 2021. Before joining UNM, Lo served in various leadership roles across several academic institutions, including Pennsylvania State University and Old Dominion University. His expertise and contributions to the field are further recognized through his active involvement in professional organizations, notably as the current vice president/president-elect of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). He will assume the presidency in July 2024.

A key area of focus for Lo is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into library services and academic support, aligning with the evolving landscape of library sciences and education technology. He actively engages in research and discussions around AI, aiming to enhance AI literacy and its ethical application in academia. Lo's work in this domain is characterized by a balance of strategic leadership and a hands-on approach to the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in educational settings.

This will be a hybrid event with attendees gathering in the Batza Room (560) and enjoying lunch from Hamilton Whole Foods while Lo presents via Zoom from the University of New Mexico. Attendees are also welcome to join via Zoom.

The Colgate University Horizons Series is sponsored by the University Libraries and the Learning and Applied Innovation Team.
