This interactive presentation will explore the nature of race in the United States and its pivotal role in shaping immigration policies. This presentation aims to shed light on the flexibility of race, how it is influenced and shaped by those in positions of power, and the resulting impact on laws and societal responses. Drawing on parallels between the reactions to the crises in Ukraine and Palestine, this presentation explores how race intersects with immigration. By the end of the presentation, you will have a deeper understanding of the relationship between race and immigration. Additionally, this presentation discusses how we can utilize the flexibility of race and its implications to foster unity and disrupt racial divides.
Workshop Speaker
Gifty Afrifa (she/her/hers) is part of the class of 2025 at Colgate University and is from Bronx, NY. Gifty is majoring in sociology. Gifty’s passion lies in empowering underprivileged children. She aims not only to advocate for them but also build strong, and supportive relationships. Her academic interests revolve around addressing educational inequality, particularly within marginalized communities. Her focus on the intersections of race, gender, and socioeconomic disparities drives her dedication to social justice initiatives. Outside of academics, Gifty enjoys reading, crocheting, and building relationships with people in her community. Engaged in many campus organizations, Gifty is an active member of Latin American Dance, Melanated, and WRCU: Colgate University Radio. Currently, she holds leadership roles as co-president of the African Student Union and social chair for Mock Trial. Post-graduation, Gifty is determined to pursue a law degree, aspiring to serve her community. Her goals for the future are to amplify the voices of underrepresented children within the education system and work with children in the education system, and promote greater inclusivity and equitable opportunities.
