NASC Colloquium: At Play in the Cosmos: A First-of-Its Kind Learning Videogame
What goes into building a first-of-its-kind learning videogame for use in college-level introductory astronomy courses for non-majors? We discuss the new learning game, At Play in the Cosmos, and the process behind its creation -- from conception to design to "builds." The game was the result of an intense collaboration between game designers and developers and professional astronomers who worked collectively on every aspect of the game from pedagogical considerations to formulating a storyline and the accompanying narration. At each stage, game development relied on play-testing and class-testing to make the game's design most effective and engaging. Attendees will see a demo of the game and have the opportunity to play along. (iPads will be provided by ITS.)
At Play in the Cosmos won the Games for Change/Mashable People's Choice Award at the Games for Change Festival 2017. The game was also a finalist for the Games for Change Best Learning Game award.
Jeff Bary, Physics & Astronomy and Rob Bellinger, Digital Media Editor at W. W. Norton & Company, will present. Reception to follow.
