Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, Tod Machover, Muriel R. Cooper Professor of Music and Media, MIT Media Lab, will speak. A look at the future of music, viewed from a career in research, production and performance at the MIT Media Lab/ Tod Machover will describe a search for new music that can increase awareness of the self and connection to others, can promote lifelong health and wellbeing, and can build stronger communities and societies, often enabled by new technological tools and scientific concepts. Audio and video examples will be given of research initiatives and worldwide performances over the past 30 years, including some very recent work such as the collaborative City Symphony Philadelphia Voices, and operas such as the “robotic” Death and the Powers and Machover’s latest, Schoenberg in Hollywood. Co- sponsored by Phi Beta Kappa, Division of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, and Departments of Theater, Music, and Computer Science. Reception to follow.
