The Colgate University Orchestra, Marietta Cheng, Conductor, will perform the dramatic Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture after Shakespeare, the shimmering Stravinsky Firebird Suite (1919) and the delightful Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, Op. 21, Kristin Lee, Violin, a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant Winner and a top prizewinner of the 2012 Walter Naumberg Competition who is also a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Although all three works on the program were composed early in the composers’ lives, they are deeply inspired masterworks. Tchaikovsky’s moving version of Romeo and Juliet stands out, a compelling reinterpretation of the tragedy in orchestral sound. Stravinsky was inspired by a Russian folk tale about Prince Ivan who, with the help of the firebird, a magical creature half woman and half bird with wings of flame, rescues the 13 princesses and defeats the evil ogre Kastchei the Deathless. French composer Lalo was inspired by colorful Spanish idioms, including flamenco and seguidilla rhythms. The public is enthusiastically invited for this free concert.
